Polar Bear Extinction
Polar bear populations are decreasing from one major problem that results in three problems that are slowly having a large effect on polar bears. The major problem for polar bears is habitat loss but this also results in Drowning, Starvation and Lower cub survival. ultimately greenhouse gas emissions are the issue. The temperatures in the Arctic are rising much faster then areas further South. Many people say they don't believe in global warming and think that its a myth, but most of these people are just factory owner or workers or even just use these things daily. Once protection for the polar bear is finalized, federal agencies and other large greenhouse gas emitters will be required by law to ensure that their emissions do not jeopardize the species which will be very expensive and costly for companies. On one side James Inhofe argues that the federal government should not step in, because the threat of global warming itself has not yet been proven conclusively. On the other side Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne announced a proposal to list the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The polar bear was listed as a threatened species but denied as a endangered species so it is not getting much help. Another reason that people have for not helping the polar bear is that the polar bears scientific name, Ursus Martimus, suggests that the polar bear is a marine animal that spends more time at sea then it does on land. This statement is completely false the polar bear spends almost all their time on land. "We recently documented a decline of about 40% North of Alaska and West Canada. US government scientists predict that we will lose about 2/3 of the worlds polar bears by mid-century" (Derocher). If we do not cut the amount of greenhouse gas emissions the polar bears my disappear in less than 40 years.
